BREAKING: PDP loses rep member to APM

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another blow in the House of Representatives following the defection of Mr. Aliyu Misau, the lawmaker representing Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

Misau’s exit comes just days after four other members of the Bauchi caucus in the House of Representatives also left the PDP for the APM, further weakening the opposition party’s influence in the state.

The lawmaker formally announced his defection in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, which was read during Wednesday’s plenary session.

In the letter, Misau attributed his decision to the prolonged leadership crisis within the PDP.

“I would like to thank the PDP for the opportunity given to me to serve the good people of Misau/Dambam Federal Constituency. The leadership crisis in the PDP has made it impossible for me to continue to represent my people and contribute to the development of the constituency,” the letter read in part.

His move is believed to be linked to the recent political developments in Bauchi State following Governor Bala Mohammed’s reported switch from the PDP to the APM.

Since the governor’s departure, several political office holders and party supporters in the state have either joined the APM or indicated plans to align with the party.

Political analysts had anticipated that lawmakers loyal to the governor would eventually follow his lead, given his significant influence over the state’s political landscape and the growing uncertainty surrounding the PDP’s internal stability.

The latest defection further reduces the PDP’s strength in the House of Representatives and highlights the challenges confronting the party as it battles internal divisions and increasing defections across the country.

For months, the PDP has faced leadership disputes at both national and state levels, with disagreements over party structures, leadership control and future electoral strategies deepening tensions among stakeholders.

The crisis has contributed to a steady stream of defections involving elected officials and prominent party members, raising questions about the party’s ability to maintain unity ahead of future elections.

With Misau’s departure, the APM continues to expand its influence in Bauchi State, bolstered by the growing number of political figures and elected representatives joining its ranks from the PDP.
