The leadership of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education Science and Technology, Ikere Ekiti (BOUESTI), has expressed deep sorrow following the deaths of three individuals during a celebration at a local hotel.
The tragedy occurred after the university’s second convocation ceremony, when a private party at the Emirate Hotel turned fatal.
In an official statement released by the Registrar, Mrs. Funmilola Adeusi, the institution acknowledged the loss of two alumni and one current student. Adeusi stated:
“Regrettably, we confirm that two of our graduands and one other student lost their lives in this tragic occurrence. Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this profoundly difficult time.”
She added that the entire “University community mourns this painful loss and sympathises with the family and friends of all those affected.”
University officials were quick to clarify that the incident did not take place on school grounds and that the official graduation ceremonies were orderly. The Registrar emphasized that “The university remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, order and integrity in all its activities” and sought to correct rumors by stating:
“We wish to categorically state that no stampede or violent incident occurred at the convocation venue or within the university premises during or after the ceremony.”
According to the Registrar, the deaths occurred at an independently organized event. She explained that the situation “took place at a private off-campus location, specifically at the Emirate Hotel, where some graduands independently organized a night party to celebrate their graduation. It was at the venue of the party that a fight reportedly broke out, leading to a stampede.”
The Ekiti State Police Command has launched a formal investigation into the matter, following reports that the chaos erupted around 1:00 am after a physical altercation triggered the deadly crush.
