A cholera outbreak in Bauchi State has claimed 58 lives and infected at least 258 people across 14 local government areas, according to official reports.

To curb the spread, the state government has inaugurated a Cholera Steering Committee led by Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau, and a Technical Working Group chaired by Health Commissioner Sani Danbam.

“The recurrent outbreaks continue to claim lives, disrupt livelihoods, and strain our health system,” Jatau said at the inauguration. “As of week 35, Bauchi recorded 258 new cholera cases and 58 deaths.”

The committees have been tasked with coordinating Bauchi’s multi-sectoral response, saving lives, and driving long-term prevention strategies in line with the National Cholera Control Plan and Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) guidelines.

Membership cuts across ministries of health, environment, water resources, education, agriculture, finance, women affairs, and information, as well as the Bauchi State House of Assembly, security agencies, emergency bodies, civil society, and development partners.

The government urged residents to adopt preventive measures, while assuring that emergency interventions are underway to contain the outbreak.
