A preliminary assessment of the Saint Academy School building collapse in Jos, Plateau State, North Central Nigeria, revealed that the structure was substandard.
At a press conference on Tuesday in Jos, the Director General of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Samson Duna, stated that early examinations by the Federal Government’s team had detected various faults in the building.
The Plateau State Government reported 22 deaths and 132 injuries after the school building fell last Friday.
NBRRI was directed to form a panel to investigate the remote and proximate causes of the building collapse and provide suggestions consistent with the institute’s mandate.
Using a multifaceted framework, Duna identified the risks associated with building collapses, as well as their causes, repercussions, and prevention techniques.
A ten-man group, led by Prof Fedrick Job of the University of Jos’ Building Department, has one month to study the remote and proximate causes of the school building collapse.
