The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has announced plans to exit the party and align with the Peoples Redemption Party.

Speaking during a television programme, Baba-Ahmed said his decision was driven by ongoing internal conflicts within the Labour Party, adding that the party has strayed from its founding principles.

“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow [Wednesday]. There is more to it. When there was real peace in the Labour Party, was when they posted back,” he said.

“They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, and because of the antecedence of the individual, to make life difficult, particularly for me. What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today.”

He confirmed that his departure would take effect at midnight, while revealing his next political move.

“I am leaving the Labour Party at midnight, and I am joining PRP. PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old,” he added.

The Labour Party has recently been grappling with internal divisions, as several members continue to express concerns over its leadership and direction.

The crisis intensified further on Tuesday following the emergence of Nenadi Usman as the party’s substantive national chairperson.
