The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, during an operation in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as a violation of police regulations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.

According to the police, the suspect had allegedly been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.

The statement disclosed that while efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm “in clear violation of extant regulations,” leading to the suspect’s death.

The Force Headquarters said the officer and members of his team had been ordered transferred to Abuja, where they would appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for “summary disciplinary measures and prosecution.”

The Inspector-General of Police also extended condolences to the deceased’s family, assuring them that justice would be served in accordance with the law.

The police reiterated their “zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct that undermines public trust.”
