The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted a viral wanted poster featuring popular Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, known as Sabinus, calling it fake and misleading.

On Thursday, the commission took to its official social media page to label the circulating poster “FAKE NEWS” and warned those responsible to stop spreading false information.

“Clout chaser, Stop this now!” the EFCC wrote in the caption accompanying the post.

The manipulated poster, which had circulated widely on social media, displayed the EFCC logo and claimed that 43-year-old Sabinus was wanted for obtaining money by false pretence. It also listed a supposed last known address as 13/14 Ligali Ayomide Street, Victoria Island, Lagos State.

Investigations revealed that the poster imitated the usual design and format used by the agency when declaring suspects wanted. The EFCC has not disclosed whether it has identified or is tracking those behind the fake material.

Sabinus, famous for his skits and online comedy content, has a large following both in Nigeria and internationally. He has not yet commented publicly on the incident.

The EFCC has repeatedly cautioned the public against sharing fake content, urging everyone to verify information from official sources before distributing it.
