Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has praised the peaceful conduct of the local government elections held across the state on Saturday.

Speaking after casting his vote at Polling Unit 007 in Mbaguzo, Ashishi Owo, Nkanu East Local Government Area, Mbah described the election as “democracy in action.” He commended the calm and orderly atmosphere, calling it the most peaceful local government election in the state’s history.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting local government autonomy, stressing its significance in bringing governance closer to the people. He also vowed to collaborate with the elected officials, regardless of their political affiliations.

“The exercise has been very peaceful, and it started on time,” Mbah said. “This is democracy in action, and it’s a critical process as we are electing those who will lead our people at the grassroots.”

Mbah highlighted that local governments have always operated as autonomous entities and reaffirmed his mandate to uplift citizens out of poverty. “We are committed to supporting local governments in implementing their programs,” he added.

On voter turnout at his polling unit, the governor expressed satisfaction, noting that it reflected the public’s belief in the government’s ability to make impactful decisions. “People are becoming more aware that government can directly affect their lives, and they are determined to elect their leaders in a democratic way,” he said. “We must respect the democratic process and provide a level playing field for everyone.”

However it is observed that in many polling units, electoral materials arrived late. Despite the generally low voter turnout, with only five to 10 voters seen at most polling stations, the elections proceeded without major disruptions.
