FG lauds Nigerians for winning elections abroad

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has extended congratulations to Nigerians who have recently won elections abroad.

Four Nigerians, including U.S.-born Dr. Oye Owolewa (District of Columbia), Chiaka Barry (Ginninderra District, Australia), Segun Adeyina (Georgia, USA), and Yemi Mobolade (Colorado Springs, USA), secured various elective positions in their respective countries.

In a congratulatory message, NiDCOM’s Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, praised their achievements, as detailed in a statement signed by the Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols at NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun. Dabiri-Erewa commended their groundbreaking accomplishments in the political spheres of their adopted countries, recognising them as role models.

Dr. Oye Owolewa was re-elected as the Shadow Representative for the District of Columbia under the Democratic Party. Chiaka Barry was elected to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Legislative Assembly for Ginninderra District under the Liberal Party. Segun Adeyina retained his seat as State Representative for District 110 in Georgia, USA. Yemi Mobolade made history by becoming the first black Mayor of Colorado Springs in 2023.

Dabiri-Erewa lauded their persistence and success, urging them to maintain their dedication as they serve in these roles. She prayed for God’s guidance, protection, and strength for them and encouraged their continued diligence in their responsibilities.

Dr. Oye Owolewa, a pharmacist, expressed his gratitude to supporters for their trust in him as Shadow Representative for the District of Columbia.

Chiaka Barry, a seasoned legal officer skilled in litigation, alternative dispute resolution, legislative drafting, policy development, and project management, has dedicated her career to community service.

Segun Adeyina, who has held numerous high-ranking positions in Georgia, has worked for over 25 years in IT programme and project management for several Fortune 500 companies, including General Motors, Ascension Health System, and Hewlett Packard/Cap Gemini.

Yemi Mobolade, a Nigerian-American businessman and politician, was elected the 42nd Mayor of Colorado Springs, marking a historic achievement as the first black person to hold this office.
