A brief fire scare occurred on Wednesday at the National Assembly after a fire broke out in the Senate wing of the complex.

The incident happened at Hearing Room 107 shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) concluded the screening of Dr Zainab Marwa, nominee representing the North-East on the commission’s board.

According to reports, the fire started in the kitchen section of the hearing room but was quickly brought under control before it could spread to other parts of the facility.

Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha reportedly played key roles in putting out the flames, helping to avert what could have been a more serious situation.

Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been caused by a microwave left switched on in the kitchen area.

No casualties were recorded, and normal legislative activities resumed shortly after the incident.

However, journalists present at the scene were reportedly instructed by committee officials to delete photographs and videos taken during the incident.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the full extent of the damage, but operations within the complex were not disrupted for long.
