“Go get your own oil,” Trump tells nations hit by Strait of Hormuz disruption

United States President Donald Trump has suggested that nations concerned by fuel shortages resulting from Iran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz should navigate the sea route and seize oil themselves.

Trump shared these remarks on Truth Social this Tuesday, coinciding with the average US retail price of petrol surpassing $4 per gallon (£0.80 per litre) for the first time in over three years.

The president took aim at American allies, including the United Kingdom, for their refusal to take part in the “decapitation of Iran”.

“I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT. You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us,” Trump said.

“Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!”

The international energy market has remained volatile since Iran, a significant oil producer, faced attacks from the US and Israel last month. Nearly a fortnight ago, oil prices climbed to $114 per barrel—the highest level seen since May 2022—following strikes on energy infrastructure.

Since the conflict began, Iran’s dominance over the Strait of Hormuz has reduced maritime shipping to a minimum. These disruptions to energy supplies have impacted nations globally, compelling governments to implement stringent energy conservation policies.

Trump has indicated that his own preference would be to seize Iran’s oil.

Iran is a member of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). According to OPEC data, with approximately 208 million barrels as of 2024, the nation possesses the world’s third-largest proven crude oil reserves, trailing only Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.
