Gunmen on Wednesday ambushed the convoy of Chris Ngige, former governor of Anambra and ex-minister of labour and employment, along the Nkpor–Nnobi road in Idemili North LGA.
TheCable gathered that Ngige was not present in the convoy at the time of the attack.
Reports indicate that the gunmen wore police and army uniforms and allegedly shot a woman who was recording the incident. A shop owner who attempted to find out what was happening was also shot, alongside a police officer in the pilot vehicle, whose uniform and rifle were reportedly taken by the attackers.
Witnesses said the pilot car was heavily hit by bullets, adding that the police officer and the two others injured survived.
Ikenga Tochukwu, spokesperson for the Anambra police command, confirmed the attack on Thursday and said officers recovered a white Mercedes-Benz SUV stolen by the assailants.
“The recovered vehicle has been secured and taken into police custody for further investigation, while the operatives have stepped up a coordinated statewide manhunt for the fleeing armed hoodlums,” the statement reads.
Tochukwu added that further updates will be shared in due course.
Ngige had previously been abducted during his time as governor in the early years of his administration. He served as governor from 2003 to 2006.
