The Paramount Ruler of Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Suanu Baridam, narrowly survived an attack after gunmen opened fire on his convoy.
The first-class traditional ruler was ambushed on Sunday evening while returning from an engagement in the Okwale community, also within Khana.
The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. along Tekar Sogho Road, which connects the area to the East–West Road.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers lay in wait between Taabaa Junction and Sogho, where they attempted to stop the monarch’s vehicle.
When the driver reportedly refused to halt, the gunmen opened fire on the convoy.
The monarch sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, while his driver was also injured in the attack.
Both victims were rushed to a hospital for treatment, with the traditional ruler currently receiving medical care.
Police Launch Probe
Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the Rivers State Police Command said unknown gunmen emerged from the bush and attacked the monarch’s black Prado Jeep, damaging the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle.
Police identified the victim as King T. Y. Baridam, the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Community, and confirmed that he suffered a gunshot injury to his thigh.
Although the motive behind the attack is yet to be determined, sources indicated that the assailants may have been on an assassination mission.
This marks the second time King Baridam has escaped an assassination attempt.
The police said patrol teams were immediately deployed to the area to comb the surroundings and track down the attackers.
“The Rivers State Police Command has commenced investigation into the incident and will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.
The command also urged members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
The incident has further raised concerns about the safety of traditional rulers and the increasing cases of violent attacks in parts of Rivers State.
