Former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, has announced his intention to contest for the position of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Lamido made this known in a post shared on his Facebook page on Monday.

The former minister of foreign affairs and one of the PDP’s founding members said he is confident in his ability to rebuild and reposition the party for future success. He also revealed plans to visit Wadata Plaza, the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, to obtain his nomination form.

“By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of national chairman,” he wrote.

“My commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable.”

Lamido said his decision was driven by the desire to strengthen internal democracy and reposition the PDP ahead of upcoming elections.

The PDP, which led Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is set to elect a new national chairman at its forthcoming convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In August, the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) zoned its presidential ticket to the south, while the national chairmanship was allocated to the north in line with party tradition.

The position was further micro-zoned to the north-west, with former governors Ahmed Makarfi (Kaduna), Sule Lamido, and Kabiru Turaki, a former minister of special duties and intergovernmental affairs, among those reportedly interested in the role.

Jigawa, Lamido’s home state, is one of the states in the north-west geopolitical zone.
