IGP Egbetokun suspends enforcement of electronic e-CMR

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the suspension of the proposed enforcement process for the Electronic Central Motor Registry Registration Process (e-CMR).

This process was initially scheduled to begin on July 29, 2024.

In a statement by the force public relations officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the relaxation of enforcement is to allow for extensive public awareness about the benefits and effectiveness of the e-CMR initiative. The initiative aims to ensure the safety and security of all types of vehicles, including motorcycles, by collecting data inputted by vehicle owners and acting on such information to flag vehicles if reported stolen, among other functions.

The statement further clarified that the e-CMR is not a revenue-generating platform but an initiative to digitalize policing for the effectiveness and general safety of lives and property of Nigerian residents.

The IGP urged the public to obtain the digitalized CMR certificate online at https://cmris.npf.gov.ng. He also warned all police officers to desist from requesting e-CMR certificates. Individuals found extorting or exploiting the public under the pretext of not having e-CMR certificates will be sanctioned accordingly.
