The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has pledged to work closely with the national assembly to ensure a “credible, fair and free” electoral process in Nigeria.

Amupitan made the remark at the 56th annual national conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT), where he was honoured by the Federal University of Lokoja for his “dedication, hard work, and inspiration to many.”

Describing the event as a “momentous occasion,” the INEC chairman highlighted the importance of law as the foundation of societal progress.

“Law is not merely a set of rules but a foundation upon which societies build their progress,” he said.

He explained that the electoral process is deeply rooted in legal principles and expressed his readiness to actively engage in the ongoing review of the Electoral Act.

“I will begin my participation in the national assembly to ensure that we develop an electoral process and laws that you, I, and all Nigerians can be proud of,” he stated.

Amupitan added that one of the key goals of the reform effort is to minimize election-related court cases.

“Let us not see electoral petitions in court,” he said, emphasizing the importance of creating a transparent and just electoral system that strengthens public trust.
