Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Israel’s continued strikes on Lebanon are a breach of the ceasefire agreement reached with the United States and could undermine ongoing peace negotiations.
Iran and the US agreed to a ceasefire on Tuesday under a 10-point peace framework proposed by Tehran.
However, both Israel and the US have maintained that the ceasefire applies only to hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the US, while Israeli attacks on Lebanon have continued.
Although the full details of the agreement have not been released, Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf said on Thursday that Lebanon was included as part of the two-week ceasefire arrangement.
In a statement posted on social media, Pezeshkian said Iran would continue to support Lebanon.
“Israel’s renewed incursion into Lebanon is a blatant violation of the initial ceasefire agreement. This is a dangerous sign of deception and lack of commitment to potential agreements. The continuation of these actions will render negotiations meaningless. Our fingers remain on the trigger. Iran will never abandon its Lebanese sisters and brothers,” Pezeshkian said.
Ghalibaf also accused the US of repeatedly failing to honour its commitments under the agreement.
One of the reported terms of the ceasefire plan includes recognition of Iran’s uranium enrichment rights.
Despite this, US President Donald Trump said America intends to work with Iran to locate and remove buried uranium deposits in the country.
Ghalibaf said continuing negotiations under such conditions would be unreasonable if violations persist.
