Jonathan dismisses ₦500bn presidential offer to split S’South votes

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has denied reports alleging he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, to split votes in the South-South region.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Media, Ikechukwu Eze, described the report as false, baseless and completely fabricated.

Eze urged Nigerians to ignore the publication, which he said originated from a “little-known website” that “falsely” attributed the claim to the former president.

He argued that the report failed to meet basic journalistic standards.

“The report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who was present or who purportedly made the alleged offer,” he said.

According to Eze, the publication displayed all the characteristics of fake news designed to mislead the public and drag Jonathan into unnecessary political controversy.

While noting that election periods often witness an increase in misinformation and false claims, he advised Nigerians to disregard the report entirely and verify sensational stories before circulating them.
