JUST IN: NLC, TUC announce fresh nationwide strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership announced a total nationwide strike scheduled to commence on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

The leadership of both unions reached this decision following an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday in Abuja.

The two prominent labor organizations have initiated immediate nationwide mobilization of their members and supporters.

This course of action by Organized Labor was prompted by the assault on NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, last week in Imo State.

Organized Labor has expressed widespread anger and has accused Imo State’s Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, of being involved in the recent attack on Ajaero in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

The organized Labor last Friday issued a five-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the replacement of the police commissioner. They also held Governor Hope Uzodimma responsible for the attack on Ajaero, despite the governor’s denial of any involvement in the incident.

Furthermore, Organized Labor called for the apprehension and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides, and they threatened to launch a nationwide industrial strike if their demands were not met.

In a move towards impartiality, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, redeployed Barde on Sunday, in preparation for the gubernatorial election in Imo State scheduled for November 11, 2023.
