Four members of a family lost their lives after a fire broke out in the early hours of the morning at their home located at Kundila Layin Baba Impossible in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the tragedy in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He explained that the fire was reported at around 4:13 a.m. by one of the agency’s staff members, Abba Datti.

Abdullahi said, “One of our personnel, Abba Datti, reported the incident at about 4:13 a.m. today (Wednesday).”

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the ground-floor structure—measuring roughly 40 by 30 feet and serving as a residential building—was already ablaze.

He noted that the fire destroyed two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a toilet.

The statement continued, “Five occupants were trapped inside the house, including the 43-year-old father, Shodandi; his wife, Rafi’a, 30; and their two daughters — 3-year-old Mardiya and one-and-a-half-year-old Yusira — all of whom were burnt to death.”

However, the agency reported that a 12-year-old boy, Aminu Shodandi, was successfully rescued by the firefighters.

The Fire Service conveyed its condolences to the affected family and advised residents to be extra careful when using fire-related items, particularly during the harmattan season.

According to the statement, preliminary investigations indicated that the blaze was caused by a mosquito coil the family lit before bedtime.

This incident comes shortly after another fire outbreak destroyed 29 shops and 19 stores at Kano’s popular Singer Market.
