Kwara state government on Thursday sealed a privately owned mortuary facility, known as “Omosebi Mortuary,” located in the Gaa Akanbi area of Ilorin, the state capital.

Led by Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-imam, government officials sealed the facility following an unexpected visit.

The Commissioner stated that the closure was a decisive action to enforce compliance with care standards for the people of Kwara State, both living and deceased.

She emphasized that besides its substandard condition, the facility, known as “Omosebi,” is not registered with the Ministry of Health as a mortuary service provider.

Addressing the press after officially closing the facility, the commissioner stressed the importance of upholding the dignity of the deceased and preventing the spread of infectious diseases due to inadequate management of remains. She stated, “‘it is important to preserve the dignity of our dead ones and ensure that infectious diseases do not reach the living from poor management of their remains, this facility does not meet the required standard.”

Dr. Musiliu Odunaiya, the Director of Medical Services and Training, instructed the morgue handlers to report to the State Ministry of Health Headquarters at Fate to address relevant issues and ensure the facility meets safety standards for public use.

Additionally, he urged the public to transport their loved ones’ remains to government-owned institutions where they can be assured of safe custody.
