Traders working in the affected part of the Ladipo Spare Parts Market have appealed to the Lagos State Government to review its decision and allow the market to reopen, calling on authorities to exercise restraint in enforcing penalties.
The appeal comes in the wake of the state government’s closure of the well-known spare parts market in the Mushin area, following what officials described as ongoing breaches of environmental regulations.
The shutdown was implemented after repeated cases of illegal refuse disposal on road medians and highways, along with persistent street trading within and around the market environment.
Confirming the action on Sunday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the government was left with no alternative after several warnings and engagements with traders failed to yield compliance.
“Despite multiple notices and sustained sensitisation, traders continued to flout environmental regulations through illegal street trading and improper waste disposal,” Wahab stated, adding that enforcement became unavoidable in the interest of public health and safety.
The Ladipo market shutdown forms part of a broader enforcement drive by the Lagos State Government aimed at compelling markets and commercial centres across the state to comply with sanitation and environmental laws.
