Kylian Mbappé was at the centre of attention during Real Madrid’s dramatic late victory over Valencia, not only for scoring the stoppage-time winner that saw him become Europe’s leading goalscorer, but also for a heated interaction with the fourth official that was captured by DAZN cameras. Throughout the match, he was also subjected to hostility from the Mestalla crowd.
The controversy began late in the first half when Mbappé was flagged offside after receiving the ball following a Valencia clearance. Puzzled by the decision, the French forward sought clarification from the fourth official at halftime.
“How can that be offside? I’m asking for an explanation,” Mbappé said. The official replied, “On camera it’s tight, sorry, talk about it inside.” Mbappé responded, “Okay, we’ll go inside and you explain, because I don’t get it.”
Inside the tunnel, Mbappé attempted to continue the conversation but became increasingly irritated when the official did not engage with him.
“You told me to talk inside and you’re not looking at me… honestly. You told me to talk inside, and now I’m here and you won’t speak.”
Visibly frustrated, he then turned to teammate Eduardo Camavinga and muttered in French, “They’s such clowns, the referees.”
Tension was also evident in the stands, as Valencia fans repeatedly aimed abuse at Mbappé, chanting, “Mbappé, son of a bitch!.” Despite the provocation, the Real Madrid star remained focused on the game and let his performance do the talking.
