The Lagos State Government has announced that rehabilitation of a 20-kilometre carriageway on the Lekki–Epe Road will commence on Sunday and is expected to last for about 64 days.

The disclosure was made by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Infrastructure, Mr Olufemi Daramola, during an inspection tour of the road corridor.

“Recall that Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has awarded the contract for the upgrade of Lekki-Epe Road – from Admiralty to Jubilee Bridge (both bounds).

“After a stakeholders’ meeting, we moved to site. Because of the Yuletide, work was postponed, but we are here to reassess and to plan for the commencement of the project,” he said.

Daramola explained that the 20km carriageway rehabilitation would involve a flexible pavement design, specifically asphalt pavement.

He added that the project would be executed in eight phases.

“We will take it section by section,” he said.

Also speaking, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said traffic management during the rehabilitation would be handled at specific intersections rather than across the entire corridor simultaneously.

According to him, the first intersection phase would run from Chevron to Igbo-Efon, with construction taking place on the Lagos-bound carriageway for an estimated duration of 64 days, following a structured eight-intersection phased plan.

“To facilitate construction while maintaining vehicular movement, the Lagos-bound carriageway will be closed in segments.

“Traffic will be diverted to the Epe-bound carriageway using a dynamic lane sharing system: morning peak (4.00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m.).”

Osiyemi stated that two lanes would remain available for vehicles on the Lagos-bound side, while one lane would be open on the Epe-bound carriageway.

“Road shoulders on the Epe-bound side are being graded to augment space for these diversions.”

He advised motorists to consider alternative routes, including connecting to the Coastal Road from Ogombo via Abraham Adesanya, to avoid the Lekki–Epe Expressway during the construction period.

“Also available to motorists is a strategic alternative route that will link the Coastal Road from Eleganza via Orchid through Lafiaji and Naale Street,” he said.

Osiyemi assured road users that adequate traffic management officers, directional signage, proper lighting and safety measures would be in place throughout the duration of the project to minimise inconvenience.

He added that the state government was collaborating with stakeholders, including the Lekki–Epe Residents Association, to increase public awareness of the rehabilitation works.

According to him, the project is designed to enhance road durability, improve safety and provide a better commuting experience along the vital transport corridor.

“The phased approach, combined with robust traffic management, is specifically designed to reduce congestion, prevent panic, and maintain steady traffic flow throughout the project period,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, also assured that sufficient traffic management personnel would be deployed to ensure smooth vehicular movement.

Giwa urged motorists to make use of alternative routes if they had no urgent need to travel along the Lekki–Epe corridor.

“We have equally made arrangements to ensure the safety of motorists during this period,” he said.
