The former Jigawa State governor and prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party, Sule Lamido, has called for the immediate nullification of the party’s Ibadan convention that produced Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as National Chairman.
Lamido issued the demand at his office in Kano while hosting hundreds of his supporters, including ex-local government chairmen, former commissioners, and other political appointees who served under his administration in Jigawa State.
He maintained that the terms of the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, and the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, are still valid and will not expire until December 8, 2025.
Lamido further proposed the formation of a caretaker committee to guide the party toward its next primaries, cautioning that leaving the PDP without a defined leadership structure could jeopardize the interests of current officeholders and aspirants preparing for future elections.
He noted that his court cases were not intended to secure personal dominance within the party but to safeguard its legacy and defend his rights, which he argued had been infringed upon.
The two-term former governor also expressed disappointment with the current state of the PDP, asserting that the party’s internal turmoil stems from attempts to marginalize founding members like himself.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Ex-Political Appointees Forum, Babanbi Ibrahim, criticised the conduct of the party’s leadership, describing it as disrespectful to Lamido by denying him the opportunity to contest for the position of national chairman. He explained that this prompted forum members to meet on November 18, leading to their decision to consult Lamido for guidance on the next steps.
