Several people were injured, including one seriously, after lightning struck a tree at an amusement park in southern Sweden on Sunday, authorities said.

Tosselilla Sommarland amusement park said a severe thunderstorm passed over the area, resulting in several lightning strikes within the park.

The park initially reported that no one had sustained serious injuries, but regional health authorities later confirmed that a 45-year-old woman was hospitalised with serious injuries.

Two other people were taken to hospital by ambulance, while two adults and five children sought medical treatment for minor injuries.

According to the Region Skåne health authority, all of the other injured victims suffered minor injuries.

Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported that the amusement park had anticipated the storm and ensured that visitors were not on any rides or in the water park pools before the weather deteriorated.

However, lightning struck a tree within the park, causing debris to fall onto a group of people who were passing nearby.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute had issued weather warnings for large parts of southern Sweden as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall swept across the region.

Authorities continue to monitor the injured while the severe weather warning remains in effect.
