Listening to Obi gives Nigerians ‘tremendous hope’ — PDP chieftain

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dan Ulasi, has said Nigerians would feel optimistic about the country’s future after engaging privately with former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.

Ulasi made the remark during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday.

“If you listen to Peter Obi one-on-one, you will have hope for this country. You will have tremendous hope that somebody has a concept of what he wants to do and how he will do it for the overall benefit of our people,” he said.

He revealed that Obi had visited his residence four times in 2026, most recently after a programme at Coal City University.

“He just gave me about 30 minutes’ notice that he was coming. And I called a couple of my friends, some top Southeasterners who were in town. And they came,” he said.

While not confirming any formal political alliance, Ulasi noted that his relationship with Obi dates back to his time as chairman of the National Republican Convention, when Obi first contested for governor of Anambra State.

“I’ve known him since I was chairman of the National Republican Convention when he ran for governorship in Anambra State. And since then, this year alone, he’s been to my house about four times.

“And when I look at the party, you know, when I started saying, I said the party, PDP, has a problem. We’re a faction, and I don’t see how a candidate with credibility will emerge to stop Tinubu. And the process Wike is going through also will not help the system.

“So I don’t see my party as presently constituted challenging Tinubu with Wike as national leader. These are part of the contradictions, which if I’m not properly informed and explained to, I will leave the party. And I want to be quoted accurately.”

Ulasi’s comments reflect growing dissatisfaction within the PDP, as he questioned the party’s ability to mount a strong challenge against President Bola Tinubu in 2027, particularly with Nyesom Wike playing a leading role.
