Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been inaugurated for a historic seventh straight term, further extending his rule as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.

Museveni took the oath of office on Tuesday at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, before thousands of supporters who gathered to witness the ceremony.

The 81-year-old leader, who has governed Uganda since 1986, secured re-election in January following a landslide win in a controversial poll.

His main opponent, pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, alleged “massive” ballot manipulation, claims that were dismissed by Uganda’s electoral commission.

Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, later fled the country, saying he feared “the regime wanted to eliminate me.”

Security was tightened across Kampala ahead of the inauguration, with armoured vehicles and heavy police presence deployed throughout the city. Authorities said the measures were aimed at preserving public order.

Speaking during the ceremony, Museveni said his new administration would mark a period of “no more sleep for all Ugandans.”

He urged citizens to prioritise wealth creation and job opportunities while consolidating achievements recorded over the last four decades in areas such as peace and infrastructure development.

During his 40 years in office, Museveni has amended Uganda’s constitution twice to remove presidential term and age limits.

His son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the country’s military chief, is widely viewed as a possible successor.
