Nigerians marked the fifth anniversary of the 2020 #EndSARS protests with memorials and tributes on X, on October 20, 2025 honoring the victims of the Lekki Toll Gate massacre, where security forces killed at least 11 unarmed demonstrators.
The Lagos Judicial Panel confirmed that the shootings were intentional, yet no one has been prosecuted, with authorities continuing to deny wrongdoing and failing to implement meaningful reforms.
Prominent voices like Aisha Yesufu and celebrities including Mr. Macaroni expressed sorrow and renewed calls for justice.

Five years on, we can only remember to resist. It shouldn’t have been at the expense of your lives. Many deniers of your deaths are still in power. We failed you and Nigeria failed us all.#EndSARS 🕊️ pic.twitter.com/RNOSepkJDh

Dear Oke,
It’s been 5 yrs since you, I & a million other 🇳🇬 youths resounded our voices against police brutality. One that had your life snuffed out by the Nigerian state.
Your death, was one amongst others that caused a pain that we can’t heal from.
Rest gentle. 🕊#EndSARS https://t.co/DxQ2JpFogX

It did not work yesterday, It won’t work today.

The 20th of October 2020 would have probably been the day Nigeria changed forever as a nation.
It was the closest to unity (devoid of the political tools of tribalism & religious sentiments) we ever had.
Those who lost their lives will forever be remembered. #EndSARS ✊
