On Thursday, the Nigerian Government inaugurated 15 locally-produced CNG-powered buses as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Clean Energy Transport Scheme. This initiative aims to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal while fostering a transition to cleaner energy sources.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Minister of Transportation Said Ahmed Alkali emphasized that the buses represent the government’s commitment to empowering citizens and advancing sustainable energy solutions in the transport sector. The vehicles were subsequently handed over to the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).

Alkali assured that the ministry would conduct extensive public awareness campaigns to ensure accessibility and understanding of the initiative. “The union operators will ensure the efficient use and proper maintenance of these buses. This is not just about today but about creating a sustainable transportation system for future generations,” he stated.

He also urged Nigerians to support the initiative, emphasizing the government’s commitment to utilizing national resources effectively for the collective benefit.

Describing the Abuja launch as a pilot phase, Alkali disclosed plans to extend the scheme to other states across the federation. Addressing concerns about maintenance, the minister noted that the buses were entrusted to the transport unions to ensure proper upkeep. This, he explained, was a strategic decision aimed at addressing the maintenance challenges often associated with similar projects.
