In line with its dedication to fostering education and academic achievement, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its Joint Venture partners in OML 18 – the Nigerian Content Development & Monitoring Board (NCDMB), Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), Total Energies EP Nigeria Ltd, Nigerian Agip Exploration Ltd, and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria (Deepwater) Ltd – have contributed a 2,300-seater digital library to the Niger Delta University, situated in Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, Bayelsa State.
The two-story digital library, outfitted with state-of-the-art Information Technology resources such as 100 computer systems, e-learning and research amenities, interactive smart boards, projectors, camcorders, e-books, e-journals, an e-learning portal, and reading areas, was officially transferred to the school administration in Bayelsa State on Thursday.
Among its features are a Wi-Fi Lounge, a print and document hall, facilities for video and audio recordings, a photography and online education center, an e-distant learning hall, offices for the Chief Librarian and various departments, an IT rack room, a newspaper archive, a stack room for new arrivals, and restroom facilities.
According to a press release issued by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the NNPC Ltd, Olufemi O. Soneye, in Abuja, the library complex is also equipped with a 500KVA power generator, a 500KVA transformer, and a dedicated water borehole complete with water purification systems.
The e-library is intended to foster ICT education and create a conducive learning environment for students and researchers at the university, ensuring they stay updated on global IT trends and advancements.
Present at the commissioning and handover ceremony of the project were the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Evwrudjakpor; Pro-Chancellor of the NDU, Matthew Seiyefa; Vice-Chancellor of NDU, Prof. Allen Agih; representative of Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board, Dr. Ama Ikuru; Deputy Manager, External Relations, NNPC Ltd, Edith Lawson; Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor; and Managing Director of SNEPCo, Elohor Aiboni.
