NNPP dissolves Kano executive

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has disbanded the Kano State executive council, along with all local government and ward leadership structures, ahead of the anticipated defection of Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Oladipo Johnson, said the NWC would soon set up a caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs in the state.

This development comes amid an ongoing political rift between the NNPP’s national leader and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Governor Yusuf.

Reports indicate that Yusuf is close to defecting to the APC, a move that Kwankwaso has strongly resisted.

The Kano state chapter of the APC has confirmed that Yusuf is expected to join the party in a few days.

Johnson, however, emphasised that the dissolution was carried out in accordance with the provisions of the party’s constitution.

He stated, “The National Working Committee of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, after an emergency meeting, has, in accordance with the constitution of the party, announced the dissolution of its Executive Committees at the State, Local Government, and Ward levels in Kano State.

“In line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, the NWC resolved to appoint Caretaker Committees to act in the interim. Further instructions will be announced in due course.

“The NWC accordingly thanked all those who held positions at the State, Local Government, and Ward structures of the party in Kano State and assured them of the party’s appreciation for their invaluable contributions.”
