The National Youth Service Corps has announced that organisations which fail to provide accommodation and transport for corps members assigned to them risk being barred from participating in the scheme.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this while addressing corps members during a working visit to Kogi State, according to a statement released by the scheme on Tuesday.

Nafiu warned, “Any employer who did not provide accommodation and transportation for Corps Members would be blacklisted from enjoying Corps services.”

He stressed that employers have a responsibility to ensure corps members are well catered for, saying improved welfare would help them perform better during their service year.

The NYSC boss also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of corps members.

“The Federal Government is resolutely committed to your security and welfare,” he said, while calling on state governments, local authorities and other stakeholders to continue supporting the scheme.

He reminded corps members that “security is everyone’s business” and urged them to promptly report any suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.

Nafiu also encouraged corps members to remain disciplined, carry out their duties diligently and avoid actions that could damage the image of the NYSC.

He urged them to take advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, describing it as an opportunity to build useful skills and become financially independent.

“Be proactive, identify business opportunities within your host communities, and start making some money for yourselves even now,” he said.

Speaking on the country’s economic situation, the NYSC DG advised corps members to develop a savings habit and manage their finances wisely.

“Take your service year as a training ground for future financial management by managing your finances wisely,” he added.

Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Kogi State, Mrs Tochi Chika Chris-Moneke, said the Director-General’s visit reflected his concern for the welfare and security of corps members and staff.

She also disclosed plans to hold a workshop for corps employers and organise a Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers programme in the state in the coming weeks.
