The presidential flagbearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has commended music star Davido for drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security concerns during the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert.

Obi, in a post shared on his X account on Sunday, said the singer’s decision to spotlight the plight of abducted schoolchildren and teachers reflected a strong sense of patriotism and social responsibility.

Davido had appeared at the event wearing a specially designed jacket bearing the names of pupils and teachers kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The outfit also carried the message, “BRING THEM HOME.”

Reacting to the gesture, Obi said, “Davido’s impactful gesture in drawing global attention to Nigeria’s security challenges warrants commendation. He prominently displayed the names of schoolchildren who had been held captive for an extended period, advocating for their safe return.

“By utilizing his international platform, Davido effectively highlighted Nigeria’s security crisis, transcending mere entertainment.”

Obi noted that Nigeria’s insecurity situation deserves wider international attention, stressing that authorities have yet to effectively tackle the challenge.

The former Anambra governor also linked Nigeria’s absence from the ongoing World Cup to leadership failures rather than a shortage of talent. According to him, the success of Nigerians in music and sports on the global stage demonstrates the country’s vast potential.

“Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup, as I previously stated, stems not from a lack of talent but from a conspicuous deficiency in political leadership that has failed to create an enabling environment for talent development,” Obi asserted.

“This assertion is underscored by two notable occurrences during the tournament: the vibrant participation and impressive performances of Nigerian artists, and the presence of numerous Nigerians representing other nations on the field.

“These observations present a significant imperative for Nigeria’s political leaders to actively foster an environment in which the nation’s youth can fully realize their potential.”

Meanwhile, Nigerian artistes have maintained a strong presence at the tournament, with Davido, Burna Boy, Rema and Ayra Starr featuring on the official World Cup soundtrack album.

Burna Boy thrilled fans during the opening ceremony alongside Shakira, while Rema joined Lisa of BLACKPINK and Brazilian singer Anitta for a live performance of their collaborative track, Goals.
