Different conventional and non-conventional security agencies in Osun State on Tuesday received a donation of 300 motorcycles from the state chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) to support and improve their operations.

Receiving the items at the Osun Command headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Osogbo on behalf of the beneficiary agencies, the Osun State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Gotan, praised President Bola Tinubu for granting financial autonomy to local government areas across the country.

The Commissioner of Police said the donation would significantly strengthen the operational capacity of security agencies in the state, noting that addressing security challenges requires cooperation, collaboration, and continuous support from all stakeholders.

“Security is a collective responsibility. The challenges we face today require collaboration, partnership, and sustained support from all stakeholders.

“The donation of these motorcycles will undoubtedly enhance our operational capacity, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, and will improve response time and patrol courage,” he said.

He further assured that the motorcycles would be properly deployed, adding, “On behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, the IGP, and other security agencies present here, I sincerely thank ALGON for this thoughtful, impactful intervention. Be assured that this motorcycle will be used judiciously.”

He also commended President Bola Tinubu, stating that the financial autonomy granted to local governments made the initiative possible.

Speaking on behalf of the donors, the Osun ALGON chairman, Mr. Samuel Idowu, explained that the council areas were able to procure the motorcycles due to the financial independence they currently enjoy.

He noted that the gesture demonstrates that when properly empowered, local governments can play a major role in strengthening national security and development.

According to him, “We are giving out 300 motorcycles in total. Each local government will receive 10 motorcycles. Police formations in each of the 30 council areas will get 3 motorcycles, DSS 2, NSCDC 2, Vigilante 1, Hunters 1, and local/community security 1, making 10 in total per local government.”

He added that the motorcycles would improve mobility, response time, and access to difficult terrain, especially in rural communities, while also strengthening community policing.

Report stated that there is an ongoing dispute between the Osun State government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the legitimacy of the council chairmen who carried out the donation.
