The Oyo State Government, through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, has intensified efforts to eliminate open defecation in the state.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, revealed that the campaign was launched on Saturday with the construction of a public toilet at Ojoo Market in Ibadan, the state capital.

Flagging off the project, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Engr. Ademola Aderinto, explained that the initiative forms part of the state government’s ongoing drive to “improve sanitation, promote public health, and end open defecation” in line with the agenda of UNICEF and the Oyo State Government.

Aderinto noted that Oyo State aims to end open defecation by 2031, emphasizing that all residents and visitors must cooperate with and support the government’s efforts to meet this target within the set timeline.

He said, “The provision of public toilet facilities in busy locations such as markets is a strategic step by the government to eliminate open defecation and protect environmental and public health.”

The commissioner added that the government remains committed to “strengthening sanitation infrastructure and implementing policies aimed at ensuring cleaner public spaces and a healthier environment for all residents.”

He also praised the management of Open Public Spaces for supporting the government’s environmental initiatives and contributing to a cleaner Oyo State.

Aderinto urged traders, residents, and visitors at Ojoo Market to make proper use of the facility and cooperate with the government’s efforts to maintain good sanitation practices.

According to him, the project, managed by Mr. Abdulateef Abdulganiyu under the Open Public Spaces initiative, will provide a hygienic and convenient alternative to indiscriminate and unhealthy sanitation practices for traders, residents, and visitors.
