Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has contributed N10 million towards improving healthcare services at Ehime General Hospital in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State.

The donation was made during Obi’s visit to the hospital, where he was welcomed by Most Rev. David Onuoha, members of the clergy, and the hospital’s management team. The Archbishop praised Obi for his consistent commitment to key sectors, especially health and education, describing his contributions as impactful and selfless.

The hospital, which is now under the management of the Catholic Diocese, is presently being renovated. In addition, plans are in progress to establish a nursing school within the facility to strengthen healthcare training and improve service delivery in the area.

As part of efforts to enhance management standards and broaden access to quality healthcare, the Diocese is expected to oversee the hospital’s operations. During his visit, Obi emphasized the need for continuous investment in healthcare and education, noting that both sectors remain vital pillars of national development.

He stated that a healthy and educated population forms the foundation for economic growth and social progress. Obi also urged governments at all levels to increase support for healthcare initiatives, while acknowledging the significant role faith-based institutions continue to play in complementing government efforts in delivering essential services.

According to Obi, stronger collaboration among government bodies, private individuals, and religious organisations would help tackle challenges within the health sector and improve access to quality medical care. He further noted that investments in healthcare infrastructure and workforce development are crucial for achieving lasting improvements in service delivery.

The visit highlighted ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure in Imo State through partnerships involving private citizens, religious institutions, and the public sector. It also drew attention to plans for expanding healthcare training through the proposed nursing school, which stakeholders believe will help produce skilled healthcare professionals and enhance medical services across the region.

Obi’s donation is expected to aid the ongoing renovation work at the hospital and strengthen its ability to meet the healthcare needs of surrounding communities.
