Leading opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso, were present on Tuesday as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) conducted its National Convention in Abuja.

The convention, hosted at the Rainbow Events Centre, attracted more than 3,000 delegates alongside key political stakeholders in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Other prominent attendees included Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola and the ADC National Chairman, David Mark.

The event, themed “So the Nation May Work”, centred on reinforcing party cohesion, reorganising its leadership structure, and mapping out strategies for the 2027 elections.

The convention is also expected to feature plans to elect a new National Working Committee (NWC) and finalise pending state congresses.

Security was intensified around the venue, while accreditation proceeded throughout the day as delegates arrived from various parts of the country.

Despite earlier challenges, including the alleged refusal of access to preferred venues such as Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, the convention went ahead as planned.

Party leaders alleged external interference in the venue selection process, a claim that further escalated political tensions surrounding the event.

The gathering also occurred amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the party, with factions led by David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe both asserting control of the party.

In response to the internal dispute and ongoing litigation, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended formal recognition of either faction.

The ADC was adopted as a coalition platform in July 2025 to unify opposition groups seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
