[PHOTOS] 20th Century ‘unique’ autograph collection fetches £78k
A collection of autographs from some of the 20th Century’s most renowned figures has fetched over £78,000 at auction.
The highest-selling item was a note signed by Chinese communist leader Mao Zedong, which went for £22,000.
Other notable autographs included those of Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley, South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, and all four members of The Beatles.
Peter Mason of Dawsons auction house in Maidenhead, Berkshire, called the collection a “unique set of items.”
A signed first-edition copy of a poetry book by Jim Morrison, the frontman of The Doors, was one of the joint-second highest selling items, fetching £6,000.
Also selling for £6,000 was a piece signed by former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, renowned for his role in opening China up to the world.
A card signed “with love from” by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr fetched £5,500.
Mr Mason said: “In the modern age of selfies, it is a reminder of the time when autograph hunting could become a life-long passion.”
The collection of signatures had been assembled by a German collector who started buying and trading autographs in the 1980s.
Mr. Mason stated that all proceeds from the auction would be donated to charities in the collector’s home country.
