[PHOTOS] Alaafin of Oyo, Lamidi Adeyemi laid to rest
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, has been buried in the ancient town of Oyo in south-west Nigeria.
His body was laid to rest on Saturday within the palace grounds, barely a day after he was pronounced dead in a hospital in Ado Ekiti, the state capital of Ekiti.
Alaafin, also known as ‘Iku Baba Yeye, was 83 years old at the time of his death.
Following his demise’s announcement, Islamic rites were performed on the late Alaafin’s body, signalling the start of his final journey home.
Islamic clerics led by the Chief Imam of Oyo town joined members of the late traditional ruler’s family and some of his chiefs in praying for his soul’s repose.
Following the prayers, his body was returned to the palace for the final burial.
Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, an Oyo prince and a close relative of the Alaafin, confirmed the monarch’s burial to the media.
