A large fire has erupted at the well-known Eco Fitness Hub in the Gwarinpa area of Abuja.

The FCT Emergency Management Department confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday.

Nkechi Isa, spokesperson for the department, reported that emergency officials have successfully contained the fire.

Officials on ground included the police, Red Cross, FCT Fire Services, Federal Fire Services, FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“The fire, which started in the lounge of the fitness centre and quickly spread was brought under control by a combined team of the FCT Fire Services, Federal Fire Services, FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA),” she said.

She stated that there were no casualties from the incident, but most of the fitness equipment at the gym was, however, destroyed by the fire.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,” Isa added.

On his part, the Ag Director General of FEMD, Engr Abdulrahman Mohammed, appealed to FCT residents to be cautious as the dry season sets in.

Abdulrahman advised that electrical appliances must be switched when not in use and also cautioned against indiscriminate bush burning.

This is not the first fire outbreak in the nation’s capital.

The FEMD director urged residents to always dial the 112 emergency toll-free number in case of an emergency.
