Police commissioner removes DPO over extortion allegations

The Commissioner of Police for the Lagos State Police Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has mandated the prompt removal of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at Meiran Police Station, Lagos State, due to a lack of effective supervision.

The DPO’s removal came in the wake of allegations of extortion made by police officers stationed at the same precinct against an engineer named Ibrahim Saliu.

Saliu had leveled accusations against the officers, claiming that they extorted N200,000 from him on Saturday, following the detention of him and his brother, Olaiya Murtala. Their detention was reportedly due to a lack of identification cards or receipts for the iPhones found with his brother.

Police spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin officially verified the DPO’s removal in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Hundeyin stated that all the officers implicated in the alleged extortion have been identified and are presently at the command headquarters, where their disciplinary proceedings have commenced in the orderly room.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate removal of the DPO of Meiran Police Station for leadership dereliction and supervisory ineptitude,” Hundeyin said.

“All the officers involved in the alleged extortion have been identified and are currently at the command headquarters, where their orderly room trial has commenced.”
