Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Border Patrol Unit have intercepted and seized over 100 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, which were being prepared for illegal transportation across the country’s border.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, announced the operation in a statement on Saturday, explaining that officers made the seizure during a stop-and-search patrol along the Illela–Sokoto Highway.

He said officers intercepted a vehicle carrying 80 jerrycans of petrol and arrested the driver, identified as Yasir Adamu. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was attempting to smuggle the fuel into neighbouring Niger Republic.

In a separate operation in Katsina State, border patrol operatives also seized 35 jerrycans, each containing 25 litres of PMS, which were about to be transported across the border. “The suspects abandoned the exhibits and fled when they saw the police team,” Hundeyin stated.

He added that efforts are underway to track down and arrest those responsible.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism and reaffirmed the force’s commitment to intensifying operations against economic crimes.
