The Osun State Police Command has taken into custody two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service in connection with a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a driver in Osogbo on Sunday.
The suspects, identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, were apprehended following the incident, which occurred near the Dada Estate area of the state capital while the officers were reportedly pursuing suspected foreign-used (“tokunbo”) vehicles.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, police operatives responded promptly after receiving a report of the shooting and arrested the two Customs officers.
Ojelabi explained that the driver of an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla, one of the cars allegedly being chased by the Customs officers, was shot and later pronounced dead by a medical doctor at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital. The body has been taken to the morgue, and the identity of the deceased has yet to be confirmed.
Police also recovered several items from the scene, including a Beretta pistol (breech number 125024), eleven rounds of 9mm live ammunition, one spent 9mm shell, a white Toyota Corolla with registration number AAA 400 GQ (Lagos), and an ash Toyota Corolla with registration number GFQ 0982 (Texas).
CP Ibrahim Gotan, the state Commissioner of Police, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The command assured the public that anyone found responsible would face the full weight of the law and urged residents to remain calm while cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information to aid the ongoing investigation.
