Police re-arrest eight suspects after custody escape in Delta

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have re-arrested eight of 11 suspects who allegedly escaped from lawful custody at a police facility in the Ughelli area of the state.

The development was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, in a statement issued at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday as part of the Nigeria Police Force’s 24-hour operational updates across the country.

According to Iniedu, the eight suspects were apprehended through intelligence-led operations. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Asaba for further investigation.

“Following the escape of 11 suspects from lawful custody at a police facility in Ughelli, concerted police efforts led to the re-arrest of eight suspects. Status: SCID Asaba Investigating,” the statement partly read.

The police also reported the arrest of another suspect on Sunday, August 16, 2026, over the alleged illegal disposal of oil-contaminated sludge along the Ughelli/Iyede Expressway.

The suspect was arrested at the scene, while a truck allegedly used in the operation was recovered. The matter is also being investigated by SCID Asaba.

In Anambra State, police officers acting on credible intelligence arrested a 49-year-old man at Obosi in Idemili North Local Government Area on Monday, August 17.

“One pump-action gun and 50 live cartridges were recovered from his possession,” Iniedu said, adding that the investigation is being handled by SCID Awka.

Meanwhile, police operatives in Kogi State secured the release of 12 abducted victims at Abocho in Dekina Local Government Area.

According to the FPRO, sustained pressure from security forces led to the victims’ release on Monday. They were taken to the Divisional Police Headquarters for debriefing before being reunited with their families.

“Sustained pressure by security forces led to the release of 12 abducted victims at Abocho, Dekina LGA. The victims were taken to the Divisional Police Headquarters, debriefed and subsequently reunited with their families,” Iniedu added.

The police said further operational successes were recorded in the Federal Capital Territory, Oyo, Benue, Niger, Bayelsa and Ogun states.
