The Presidency has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his recent pledge that he would serve only one term if elected president.
Obi had said in a viral interview clip that even “with a gun to my head,” he would not stay in office beyond four years. However, the Presidency dismissed the promise, questioning his credibility.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, reacted on X, saying people who believe Obi’s one-term promise will “believe anything.” He argued that Obi’s past political actions show inconsistency and shifting loyalty.
Onanuga pointed out that Obi had previously pledged loyalty to the All Progressives Grand Alliance while serving as governor of Anambra State but later moved to the Peoples Democratic Party. He also described Obi’s political journey as unstable, saying he has moved across different parties over time.
According to him, Obi’s history suggests that his promises cannot be trusted and that his political commitments have not been consistent.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party and came third behind Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, has since joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress after leaving the African Democratic Congress coalition ahead of the 2027 elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.
