The Lagos State Government clarified on Wednesday that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has not filed a lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) concerning any alleged plans to arrest and prosecute him after his term.
Reports circulated () suggesting that Sanwo-Olu had filed a suit to prevent the EFCC from taking action against him post-tenure as Lagos governor.
However, in a statement, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, stated that the government would investigate how the case surfaced without the governor’s knowledge.
“To clarify, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has neither initiated any lawsuit nor instructed any legal practitioner to file a suit on his behalf on this subject,” the statement partly read.
“It is implausible for the Governor, who currently enjoys immunity under the Constitution and has nearly three years remaining in his term, to instruct a lawyer on such a matter.”
The commissioner also refuted claims of an EFCC investigation into the governor, asserting that the anti-corruption agency has neither summoned nor threatened to arrest Sanwo-Olu or any member of his staff.
“For the record, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu exemplifies commitment to service, with prudent and responsible management of public resources,” Pedro stated.
“Consequently, as Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu continues his diligent efforts to improve the quality of life for all Lagosians, he has no concerns about his eventual departure from office in May 2027.”
