Suspected terrorists launched an attack on Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State during Easter celebrations, targeting two Christian worship centres, killing no fewer than seven people and abducting several others.

The incident, which took place in the early hours of Sunday, threw the community into chaos as heavily armed gunmen invaded the area in large numbers.

The councillor representing Awon Ward, Mark Bawa, confirmed the attack and named the affected churches as First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church, both situated in Ariko.

“I am currently on my way to the community to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Some sources said seven persons were killed, while others claimed eight. I will provide an update once details are confirmed,” Bawa said.

He noted that poor telecommunications network in the area may have worsened the situation by delaying a swift response.

“The attackers came in large numbers. They surrounded the area and began shooting sporadically at worshippers. Several people were killed, while many others were taken away into the bush,” he added.

Residents reported that the gunmen operated for a prolonged period without any resistance, sparking renewed concerns over the insecurity and exposure of rural communities in the region.

As of the time this report was filed, the Kaduna State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the attack.
