Suspected herdsmen raze houses, kill four people in Benue

Two towns in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area were the targets of separate attacks by suspected herders that reportedly left four people dead.

The roaming herds are also alleged to have destroyed a number of homes.

Nine individuals were killed last week in separate attacks by suspected herders in the same Guma LGA.

Samuel Ortom, the state’s governor, is a coincidental native of the Guma LGA.

Locals spoke about the most recent attacks, which took place on Friday and early Saturday, September 9 and 10, 2022, that the accused herders had raided various communities and killed four people.

According to reports, three persons were slain in the Yogbo neighborhood on Friday night and one more in the Ukohol community on Saturday morning.

A local who did not want to be named said, “Two women were killed behind Yogbo primary school and another one also within the community yesterday (Friday).

“Incidentally, the chairman of the local government comes from this village (Yogbo).

“Today (Saturday), the attackers killed one person at Ukohol. They also burnt many houses in several villages that were attacked in the area.”

According reports, residents of the affected towns have left because they fear additional attacks.

Four persons were killed in the attacks, according to local government chairman Mike Ubah, who confirmed the attacks.

“Four people were killed. Three of them at Yogboh while the remaining one was killed at Ukohor within the said period,” the chairman said in a terse statement to journalists on Saturday.

All efforts to reach the State Command Public Relations Officer, Catherine Anene, to get her comment on the attack was unsuccessful.
