The Swedish Prosecution Authority announced on Tuesday that it will charge an 18-year-old man with planning a terrorist attack in Stockholm on behalf of the Islamic State group.
Prosecutors stated that the suspect prepared the attack between August 2024 and February 2025.
“We believe the purpose of these preparations was to instil deep fear among the population in the name of the Islamic State. The act could have caused severe harm to Sweden,” said Deputy Chief Prosecutor Henrik Olin in a statement.
Although prosecutors withheld specific details of the plan, they revealed that the man also faces allegations of preparing serious crimes under Sweden’s Act on Flammable and Explosive Goods, as well as undergoing terrorist training.
Authorities plan to file the charges on Thursday and will hold a press conference the same day.
The suspect will also face charges alongside a 17-year-old boy for attempted murder in Germany in August 2024. Both are additionally accused of participating in a terrorist organisation.
Police arrested the 18-year-old in Stockholm on 11 February, and he has remained in custody since then.
